Helping your kid choose a trade
- Page last updated October 25, 2026
A short guide for parents whose adult child — often 18 to 25 — is looking at trade school or a registered apprenticeship. Written for adults. This site is not teen- or high-school-first.
Quick take
Your job is not to pick the “best” school from a ranking. Ask what the program actually leads to, what it costs, whether there is a registered apprenticeship path, and how to verify the school or sponsor on official sites.
Questions worth asking together
- Is the goal a certificate, a license, a job offer, or a registered apprenticeship?
- What does the program cost in total, and what aid or wages (if apprenticeship) apply?
- Is the sponsor listed on apprenticeship.gov? Can you find them in our state directory?
- What happens if they leave early — refunds, tools they must buy, any contract?
- Who hires graduates locally, and can you talk to a recent completer?
Trade school and apprenticeship are both options
Some trades lean classroom-first; others lean earn-while-you-learn. See Trade school vs apprenticeship. Neither path is automatically better.
What we will not tell you
We do not publish a “top 10 schools for your kid” list. Our directory shows public data with sources — not paid rankings. Confirm everything with the school or sponsor before anyone signs.
